No.64

Hey Reader,

Almost 4 years ago, I started talking about the alarming pass rate of the barber exam in California. At the time, 50% of candidates passed the exam. It was a coin flip and sadly, times haven't changed.

In a recent board meeting, California reported the pass rates for the last quarter of 2023. Overall, it was a 46% pass rate, but what was really alarming was the apprenticeship pass rate.

37% exam pass rate for apprentices in California. 272 passed. 466 failed.

466 people have to pay an additional $75 to re-take the exam. 466 people have to wait even longer to be official and cut in the shop with a license.

If you want to see the pass rates of specific apprenticeship programs, here's the list.

Apprenticeships in Trouble?

Looking at the list of 32 programs, only 4 programs had a pass rate above 70%. To me, that means 28 programs didn't pass.

Cs get degrees, not Ds.

What now?

Nothing is for certain, but the Board is certainly plotting to take action. They are investigating some of these low performing programs in partnership with NACCAS and BPPE.

In a recent board meeting, it sounds like they are losing faith in the effectiveness of the apprenticeship programs. Time will tell if we'll see a Bill attempt to end it.

I mean it only takes 1000 hours in California to get your license now anyway...well, hypothetically. You still have the pass the exam, and well, that's a coin flip.

Why do you think apprenticeship programs are performing so poorly? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

If you want to see pass rates by Barber School, here's that list.
