Hey Reader,
Last week we covered trends in education, this week we'll explore trends in tools. We're living in an era with the most tool options in the history of our industry. It used to be dominated by the Big 3 (Wahl, Andis and Oster) but new players have entered the chat.
Let's start by just looking at the releases by company and then identify some trends based on those releases.
Releases in 2024
Andis released their Envy II, Black Collection featuring the Phaze Blade, they brought back the Phat Blade and dropped the eMerge detachable clipper.
Babyliss released their new Nano Light Ionic High-Speed Dryer and dropped multiple color way collections like Neon, Sand and Matte Black.
Oster released a cordless 76 along with an all black cordless collection.
Stylecraft released the Saber 2 Clipper featuring a magnetic top.
TPOB officially launched in the US and released the Play Trimmers along with multiple different color way collections in all black and all white.
Wahl released their Vapor Clipper, Vanquish blowdryer and Kuno clipper.
Complete the Collection
Instead of dropping brand new models, we're seeing companies drop new 'collections' aka colors. Collections typically come in 4s: clipper, trimmer, shaver and blowdryer. Instead of buying one clipper or one trimmer, collections may make the barber want to complete the entire set and buy the whole collection.
Stylecraft dropped the Saber 2 Clipper to go with the Saber Trimmer. Wahl dropped the Vanquish blowdryer to go with their clippers and trimmers. TPOB dropped the Play trimmer to match the clipper.
Be on the look out for more clipper companies to continue releasing tools until they have all 4 tools to complete a collection. From there, they'll like just keep releasing new colorways.
New Blowdryers
As shear cutting and hair styling continues to rise, barbers are becoming more and more interested in upgrading their blowdryer. Wahl released the Vanquish and Babyliss released the Nano Light. The designs feel very similar to each other, likely utilizing similar technology.
Looking Forward
Every company has a product roadmap. What is the next product drop? Based on the releases this year, it feels like something big could be coming. Typically, Babyliss has been the company that shakes things with up with a new product unlike anything else on the market. They felt rather quiet this year, only releasing the blowdryer and new colorways. That could mean they have found their holy grail of tools, or it could mean something big is on the horizon.
