No.107

Hey Reader,

The season of giving is here. Black Friday is next week which means people are starting to make their list and check it twice.

Before we dive into 4 holiday specials that every barber should consider, let's set the scene.

Convenience is king

Most people appreciate convenience. Every Mother's Day, my gym sells Mother's Day cards. I've bought one from them for the last 3 years. After the work out, the instructor typically shares announcements about the latest happenings and offerings. This is where they'll highlight Mother's Day cards being sold in the lobby.

Convenience at its finest. Killing two birds with one stone as some might say.

Similarly, your clients will be buying gifts this season. What could they possibly 'add to cart' during their next visit to your chair? Or what could they add to their wish list?

Experts say $1 trillion dollars will be spent during the holidays. That's roughly $890 per household. They're predicting that 'value-conscious' giving decisions will be made because of the unpredictable economy.

How might you be able to offer a 'value-conscious' option for your clients? In other words, what no-brainer deals could you offer?

Let's look at 4 holiday specials that every barber should consider.

1. Gift Cards + Gift Voucher

The client buys a gift card and receives a gift voucher. They can either give the voucher to the person receiving the gift card, or they can keep the gift voucher for themselves.

You can offer different tiers like: Buy a $50 gift card and get a $10 voucher or buy a $100 gift card and get a $25 voucher. These make amazing stocking stuffers and last minute gifts. Perfect for the client who has a hard time making a list. They can easily just tell their family and friends to get them a gift card to their favorite barber.

If you're doubting this strategy, just Google how much money Starbucks makes on gift cards every year. Can we apply this thinking to the shop? Business is business.

Bonus: set up gift cards on your booking platform but also offer a physical gift card option to elevate the giving experience.

2. Service Packages

I might ruffle some feathers with this one, but hear me out. Let's say your standard haircut costs $40. Offer a special service package like: 3 haircuts for $120 $100. The clients pays $100 and can redeem the 3 haircuts whenever.

This is a golden example of a 'value-conscious' offer. Some of your most loyal clients won't go for it because they want to fully support you and pay in full every time, which is totally fine. Others might really appreciate the offer if times are tough. And then there are the first timers who will love this offer and it'll also guarantee client retention.

Full transparency, I've been running a service package special for the last few weeks and sold 7 packages. That's an extra $700. Not bad.

Bonus: set up packages in your booking platform to streamline this offering. Often times, they can even set up family relationships where a family could redeem the haircuts for their children. Not all platforms offer this, but some do like Vagaro.

3. Product Discounts

Offer a discount off product. Buy 1 product get 10% off. Buy 2 products get 15% off. Buy 3 products get 20% off. If your client is needing to restock product, they're either buying from you or Target/Amazon. Make it convenient for them. Attach an expiration date to the special offer. This drives urgency.

Bonus: create mini-post it like notes next to the products to show what is discounted.

4. Clearance Discounts

Do you have products that have been sitting on the shelves for a while? Offer a bigger discount. You could group products together and even toss them in a $20 bin or $15 bin.

Bonus: place a bin close to your front desk or waiting area to ensure clients see them.
