A look inside my journal

No.79

Hey Reader,

With only a couple weeks left in the year, I'm taking a quick break from the Trends Series to share my end of the year reflection exercise with you.

At the end of the year, I always pull out my notebook (yes, a physical notebook) and I write out some reflections.

It's a ritual that helps me look back, before looking forward. Often times, my reflections actually influence my goal setting and vision for the coming year.

I've kept a somewhat consistent journal for the last 10 years. Every once in a while, I'll pull out an old journal and return to that version of myself. It's a trip.

Here are the questions that will guide my end of the year reflections this year. If any of them resonate, consider writing out your own answer to the question(s). I recommend setting aside at least 30 minutes to an hour to go through them.

  1. Grab a drink. We're making a toast to your biggest achievement(s) this year. What are we celebrating?
  2. Think of the things that brought you life. What do you wish you'd done more of this past year? Anything you wish you did less of?
  3. Think of the time(s) when you someone gave you a compliment. What emerged as a strength or a 'zone of genius'?
  4. Scroll through your photos. What relationships/moments did you enjoy the most? Any the least?
  5. Examine your current lifestyle. What healthy habits grounded you this year? Any unhealthy habits?
  6. Look at your bank account. Where did most of your money go? What does that say about your priorities?
  7. Think about the big picture. What big dreams have remained? Did any change or even die this year?
  8. Think about everything you went through. Who have you become because of it (for better or for worse)?

After you answer the questions, consider sharing the most meaningful reflections with a close friend or family member. Verbally sharing your written answers can often bring even more closure.

If you're the reflective type, are there any questions you would add to this list? Reply with your question, I'd love to add it to my list.

Alright, finished with No.79. See you next week with another trend from the industry!
