Hi Reader,

Can you believe it's December already? With 2025 right around the corner, over the next month we'll cover some of the top trends we witnessed in the barber industry throughout 2024.

Trends in Education

Let's drop some stats: according to the State Board in California, there was a 82% increase in barber licenses issued year over year from FY22-23 to FY23-24. In other words, the barber industry is booming. There is a growing interest in the barber profession which creates the need for education.

With states like California lowering barber school hours from 1500 hours to 1000 hours, there is a growing need for 'continuing education.' Newly licensed barbers are hungry to learn and are turning to online educators and their academies for the real world lessons they may not have learned in barber school.

The Rise in Online Education Communities

Tomb45, New Era of Barbering, Barber Accelerator, Faded Culture Academy and School Barbering Academy. What do these have in common? They are online 'skools'. Hosted on Skool, barbers pay a monthly subscription for access to content, workshops, coaching and more.

From $49/month to $120/month, these online communities appeal to barbers looking for mentorship and guidance. Not every barber finds themselves in a shop environment where they prioritize barber development and so they turn to these online communities for a professional blueprint.

Tomb45 has taken this format by storm. Right now, they have 1.2k members in their community. The current membership price is $120/month. $144k per month x 12 months = $1.7 million per year.

Seeing numbers like this, I wouldn't be surprised if we see more barber influencers and educators create their own online communities in 2025.

New Barber Schools on the Horizon

So, what would be the next step for these online education communities? It might be to start a barber school.

ProFresh Barber Academy in Georgia, Faded Culture Academy in Texas and Educo Academy in California are new barber schools founded by established barbers. In an industry that is growing, there is a demand for more schools. It's not a bad business idea.

On the horizon in 2025, we're likely to see barber schools begin to battle it out. If a prospective student has a choice of barber schools, which will they choose? Overall branding, social media presence and community involvement will be key characteristics for barber schools to thrive in a competitive landscape.

Looking Forward

As the industry continues to grow, so will the need for education. From online communities to barber schools, keep your eye out for rising educators and for established educators to pivot.
